Creating a Community of Abundance

No matter who you are or where you come from, we all get hungry.

This blog will document the highs and lows of my 2021-2022 YAV year. I will be serving at Okra Abbey and living in intentional community at the Big Green House

About Zella Roberts

Hunger is a universal human experience. My name is Zella, I’m 22 years old and I use they/them pronouns. I’m originally from a working-class community outside of Charleston SC but I’ve spent the last few years working, studying, and organizing in Swannanoa NC. This May I graduated from Warren Wilson College with my Bachelors in social work, with a concentration in interfaith leadership. I've had a lifelong passion for social justice and started organizing at 16 around queer issues. Since I've matured as an activist and reclaimed my spirituality, I've found my home in faith-based food security and economic justice work. My work with Asheville Poverty Initiative and the Poor People's Campaign taught me so much about faith and community building.

od this is something that connects us across lines of difference. Growing up food insecure I remember how it felt to read about how Jesus fed a crowd of 5000 on 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish for the first time. At a young age, this story taught me that the power of God transcends man-made ideas of scarcity. As people of faith we strive to follow in his footsteps as best we can, from food pantries run out of church basements, to Wednesday night potlucks where everyone brings something to share I can't recall a time in my life when food and faith have not been deeply interconnected. My service at Okra Abbey is a natural extension of these commitments.
